NYSTRÖM INSTRUMENTS

One morning in early 2024, while The Midium® curator Cam was browsing Instagram, they saw Nyström Instruments' compact generative FM drum machine, the Crum Drum, for the first time and knew they found a special musical instrument.  Driving from Los Angeles to Malmö can be tricky, so Cam began a conversation with the company's founder, Albert Nyström, on IG that resulted in the pre-built Crum Drum making its debut in the United States shortly thereafter.  The Swedish synth maker's story finds inspiration in several disciplines, and one of Nyström's aims for his drum machines and synthesizers is for them to play a more collaborative role with the artist and musician who creates with them.

Read more about the Nyström Instruments story...

Based in Malmö, Sweden, Albert Nyström is a small-scale instrument maker, music teacher, and musician with a background in jazz guitar and a keen interest in technology and synthesizers. "In 2020, while doing my master's degree in music education, I began teaching myself electronics, programming, and instrument design," says Nyström of his beginnings as a synth inventor and builder. "For the past few years, I have been building and developing electronic instruments with unique and interactive features," and that experience forms the foundation for all that's to come from Nyström Instruments.

After designing a handful of experimental instruments, Nyström developed the Crum Drum: a compact drum machine which combines ease-of-use with complex generative functions to produce music with artists who embrace unconventional workflows.  "My goal," adds Nyström, "is to create inspiring instruments where not only the user influences the instrument, but also where the instrument influences the user."

The Crum Drum marks the beginning of Nyström Instruments' story as a creator of musical instruments that both welcome, and contribute to, the artist and musician's creative process to compose art and music.

The Midium® is proud to welcome Albert Nyström and Nyström Instruments to the U.S, and to our collections.  We look forward to all that is to come as time goes by.
