THE MIDIUM® CURATOR'S NOTE: Vintage Synthesizer

CAMI: This Roland SH-101 was recently acquired from a collector in the Los Angeles area.  With regards to its physical appearance, save for the relatively few imperfections that we did our best to represent in the photos (i.e. small scratches on the surface, imperfections in the corners and in the modulation section), this Roland SH-101 is the finest example I have seen in the last 20 years.  We spent four months researching our market, personally viewing and testing six Roland SH-101s owned by various artists and studios.  Our search for the right Roland SH-101 to offer in The Midium® Vintage Collection finally yielded this particular unit, which passed all of our tests for functional condition, physical/aesthetic condition, and cleanliness.  

All sliders and switches respond accordingly, and the MIDI input and output also passed our tests.  This unit includes the Tubbutec SH-1oh1 µTune Edition upgrade, which is already installed.  For more information on the Tubbutec upgrade, please read the description below, which contains the same information found on the Tubbutec website (last referenced on 15 June 2026).  The upgrade adds manifold functions that require familiarity with its owner's manual, so we recommend spending time learning how to use all of its functions in order to get the most out of it.  Please note that some original functions may have been replaced or may function differently as a result of the Tubbutec modification.

This particular Roland SH-101 is clean, with our The Midium® sticker placed on the bottom panel.  It does not come with the original power supply.  This Roland SH-101 is being sold as-is, and so is final sale.

THE LEGENDARY SOUND THAT STARTED IT ALL.*

The Roland SH-101 Synthesizer offers vari­ous functions for more effective and flexible performance as well as excellent synthesizing ability. 

Uncompromised sound can be obtained by mixing a waveform from the VCO, Noise and the signal from the SUB Oscillator.  The built-in sequencer allows automatic playing of up to 100 steps.  The Automatic Arpeggio function alllows automatic playing simply by pressing a chord.  Transposition to any key is possible by the Transpose function.  The Portamento Mode selector switch includes the AUTO position. In this mode a portamento effect is produced only while you are playing in a legato manner.  Provided with Output/Input jacks for CV/ GATE and External Clock Input, more integral connections with other devices are made possible. {1V/1 Oct)  AC & Battery powered system is adopted.

MAIN FEATURES:

SOME FEATURES IN MORE DETAIL.

ACCENT.

While the siblings of the SH-101 – the MC-202 and TB-303 – both have this feature important for many musical styles, it was unfortunately lacking in the SH-101…until now!
The SH-1oh1 accent consists of an envelope with a fixed fast attack and a decay adjustable between 1ms and 5s. It can be routed to VCA, filter or both while the amount can be adjusted individually. The accent can be programmed in the sequencer or triggered via midi velocity in various ways.


IMPROVED SEQUENCER.

The SH-101’s sequencer has been vastly improved and brought up to date. It now features 32 sequences with 120 steps each. Attributes like accent and/or glide can be programmed for each step.  The individual sequences can be switched via the keyboard in multiple ways: Instantaneously or when the running sequence has finished. In both cases sync is maintained.  They can also be chained into a complete song making it possible to produce pattern based. A new song can even be programmed while the old one is playing – perfect for jam and live sessions.And of course you don’t need a battery to keep your sequences.


CLOCK SOURCES AND DIVIDERS.

The SH-1oh1 sequencer, arp and ‘Random’ S/H-style lfo can be clocked by multiple sources.  The internal LFO or external trigger input, midi clock or midi notes.
Additional clock dividers are built in for these clock sources.  This means you can for example have the ‘Random’ lfo synced to the internal lfo, while the arp is clocked at half its speed, the sequencer is synced to midi 16th and the ‘Random LFO triggered by an external trigger signal.

  • Q: Is the SH-1oh1 compatible with analogue mods such as the NovaMod?
  • A: Yes

 

  • Q: Does the mod alter the sound of my SH-101 in any way?
  • A: No, if you don’t use any of the additional features, your SH-101 will sound exactly the same.

 

  • Q: Is feature XY from the original SH-101 still there?
  • A: Most likely yes. Great care has been taken to maintain the behaviour of the original synth and add features on top.

 

  • Q: Are CV/gate inputs and outputs still working?
  • A: Yes

 

  • Q:Can I install the mod without the midi connectors?
  • A:Yes, they are detachable and you can choose not to use them

  • A:The SH-1oh1 is designed an manufactured in Germany. Only lead free components and solder are used.

SH-1oh1 MICROTONAL EDITION.

The SH-1oh1 µTune is a special edition of the Tubbutec SH-1oh1. It has all the features of the SH-1oh1 but also:

  • Microtuning with high resolution
  • Upload up to 31 custom scales via midi sysex. For example using Scala.
  • Switch scales live
  • Includes a scale editor! For each key you can set base note, coarse and fine pitch via midi CC. Save your custom scale when satisfied.
  • Export scales via midi-sysex, or send them to other synths
  • Custom tuning available on CV-out (5 octaves only)

The SH-1oh1 µTune special edition is hand assembled and tested in [the Tubbutec] workshop.
